I am sitting in the lobby of my son’s Brooklyn school, reading the diaries of Victor Klemperer. The diaries have sat on my shelf for years — invaluable, excruciating records of daily life in the Third Reich. My son’s school is Jewish. It’s the most reform kind of Jewish school imaginable; even Klemperer might have been comfortable here. But the building has Hebrew on its facade, so I am sitting here because I am unable to concentrate anywhere else.

CHICAGO (AP) — As the first blast of wintry weather hit Chicago, dozens of migrant families without a place to live were moved off snowy city streets and into the basement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in a nearby suburb. The last-minute, temporary solution around 1 a.m. Wednesday, coordinated by volunteers and suburban Oak Park officials, came as Chicago has struggled to house the growing population of asylum-seekers ahead of the deep winter months. City officials have been scouting locations for winterized tents, but City Council members have criticized Johnson's administration for a lack of details. This week, the city publicized its winter efforts, including providing 16 “warming buses” at police stations during overnight hours, and winter coats for new arrivals. Last month, the city touted its partnerships with several outside organizations to provide food, clothing and hygiene items.

CNN —For decades, criminologists and true crime documentaries have attempted to understand what causes serial killers to commit the atrocities they do. CNN spoke with three forensic psychologists and serial killer experts to better understand what causes people to become serial killers. Fight or Flight: Transgender Care Bans Leave Families and Doctors ScramblingLaws in 20 states have left the fate of clinics in doubt and families with transgender children searching for medical care across state lines. But two new laws have left them debating whether to leave Iowa. A ban on a medication that pauses puberty taken by their transgender son, Brecker, was signed into law by the state’s governor in March. “It’s like trying to cross a bridge but the boards just fall out,” said Brecker, who recently finished seventh grade and began receiving puberty blockers in December, a year after coming out as transgender. “So you’re hanging on those two ropes, inching yourself across, not knowing whether the ropes are going to snap or break.”In 20 states, bans or restrictions on transition-related medical care for transgender youths are upending the lives of families and medical providers.

[1/2] Mykul Coscia, who performs drag as Eazy Love at Play, a night club, poses for a portrait after a deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. March 29, 2023. Even before the shooting, many transgender Tennesseans felt villainized by their state's efforts to regulate the lives of gay and trans people, and were increasingly fearful for their safety. Police identified the Nashville shooter as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, and initially referred to Hale as female. Every time there is a school shooting, Story VanNess said she has sleepless nights: she was a special education teacher in a Knoxville school for several years before becoming the director of trans and non-binary programs at Knox Pride. "We've had another school shooting but, because this shooter was trans, that's taken a back seat so politicians can demonize trans people.

In a recent note, Charles Dumas, chief economist at U.K.-based investment research firm TS Lombard, said that action on climate change is often criticized as moving too slowly. "Effectively by 2030 the cost of renewable electricity is going to be half that of coal and gas sourced electricity," Dumas told CNBC. COP26 prioritiesAmid this backdrop, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, better known as COP26, will meet in Glasgow in November. While the developing world, including several African nations, has great potential in developing sites for generating solar power, that power needs to move easily. Both in developed and developing countries, you can provide labor intensive employment through renewable energy," Steele said.
